At the beginning of every summer, I am always trying to find a slew of good books to read by the pool, on a hammock, on a beach, on a plane, etc. I thought I would make it a little easier for you all and compile a list of some of my favorite reads for the summer. I texted my friend Vivian a couple weeks ago looking for some recommendations (I owe her for three of these book suggestions), and I told her I wanted “something kinda like girly like Sweetbitter but also scholarly/ quality/ intellectually stimulating at the same time.” I kind of laughed out loud when I sent that, but that accurately describes the type of books I like to read! So if that’s you too, you’re in luck! Enjoy 🙂
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
I read this book around sophomore year of high school, and it is still one of my favorite books ever! I convinced my mom to read it, and it is now one of her favorites too. It’s set on an island off the coast of Massachusetts and is full of twists. Killer ending!
The Hypnotist’s Love Story by Liane Moriarty
I loved reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, so I was stoked to read this one. It’s a super easy read that you can finish it in a weekend. You will not want to put it down! It’s told from differing points of view, so you really get inside the character’s heads.
The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
I actually listened to the audiobook on my drive from Dallas to Nashville a couple months ago, and it had me literally gasping in my car. So much TEA! Very similar to Big Little Lies in that it’s about a very close knit community who is always in each other’s business.
Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler
Man, oh man, I love this book! It’s all about a girl making her way in New York City by way of the restaurant industry. I’m going to sound super nerdy when I say this, but I love a good coming-of-age story. This has since become a series on Stars! It is on my list of shows I want to watch.
Touch by Courtney Maum
I also listened to this book, and I just finished it last week. I was genuinely sad to finish it because I loved it so much! It’s all about the battle between touch and technology. It is one of the most relevant books I’ve read in a while. Fascinating and super well-written!
The Girl Who Never Read Noam Chomsky by Jana Casale
I’m in the midst of this one right now and am currently trying to finish up this post so that I can go read on my porch! I actually laugh out loud at some of the stuff Casale says in this book. It is also super relatable in terms of the way women approach relationships and the differences between men and women. I’ve sent my mom lines from this book a couple of times because of how accurate it is. LOVE.
Up Next:
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I can’t say much about this one yet seeing as though I have not read it, but my mom recommended it to me. Reese Witherspoon liked it so much that she’s producing a web series based on the book! It’s about a rock band and their journey to fame. The author actually wrote every song of the band’s that the story mentions and put the lyrics in the back of the book.
